IMDS
IMDS (International Material Data System) is a database system for parts and materials in the automotive industry. It was jointly developed by the automobile manufacturing companies Audi, BMW, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, Opel, Porsche, Volkswagen and Sweden's Volvo Car Group. IMDS saves and maintains all relevant material information used in the automobile manufacturing process. Only in this way can it fulfill the obligations imposed on automakers and their suppliers through national and international standards, laws and regulations. At the same time, each supplier has an ID to identify the supplier of the submitted materials.
 
 
Advantages of using IMDS to provide customers with information:
1. It can be used by vehicle companies and parts companies in the automotive industry, including first-tier suppliers and second-tier suppliers.
2. Suppliers can provide parts information to multiple manufacturers only by using one IMDS system.
3. Using only one central system can reduce costs for suppliers.
4. Its own database can receive IMDS data structure which can help to improve its functions.
5. IMDS can help meet national and European (such as the European End-of-Life Vehicles Directive (2000/53/EC)) inspection standards. It can also guarantee Ford's substance management standards (RSMS).
6. At present, it has been recognized by most companies.
 
 
The main operation process of IMDS
1. Apply for a company account in IMDS.
2. Log in to the system with the account you applied for, upload the material data form, and wait for approval.
If everything goes well, it will be approved by the customer at a certain time (different customers, the approval time is different). Download the approval document of the material data form, and it’ll finally be submitted to the customer as part of the PPAP.
